The nominated packaging, Lightwing™ 30 on the Tetra Brik® 1000 Edge from Tetra Pak, responds to challenges highlighted by the Swedish Rheumatism Association regarding the usability of conventional screw caps. The innovative snap‑on closure offers a more accessible, intuitive opening experience and secure sealing, improving everyday ease of use, particularly for people with reduced grip strength. Being nominated by the Swedish Rheumatism Association is a recognition that means a great deal to us, says Marie Sandin, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Sweden.
The nominated packaging is Lightwing™ 30 on the Tetra Brik® 1000 Edge from Tetra Pak.
Screw caps can be difficult to handle for people with reduced pinch grip strength. Ribbed surfaces often provide indistinct resistance, and when a high level of force is required, there is a risk of fingers slipping, which can cause discomfort or pain.
Lightwing™ 30 is a snap-on cap with a generous opening tab that allows for several different grip options. The cap can be opened by lifting it with one or both thumbs, using the side of the thumb, or by approaching from the opposite direction and using other fingers – and it also works for one-handed use. Closing is just as simple: the smooth underside of the cap eliminates the risk of misalignment, and a light press is enough to close the package.
-Screw caps can be difficult to open if you have reduced pinch grip strength. This packaging opens in a different way and features a ‘lip’ that allows several alternative grips to be used. We have received feedback from our members that it works well for them, and packaging with tethered caps that actually works effectively deserves recognition, says Stina Nordström, Secretary General of the Swedish Rheumatism Association.
-Being nominated by the Swedish Rheumatism Association is a recognition that means a great deal to us. When Ruben Rausing founded Tetra Pak 75 years ago, his vision was to simplify everyday life by replacing cumbersome glass containers with smart paper-based packaging for liquid foods consumed every day. At the time, the focus was on milk and cream. Since then, our packaging solutions have evolved in many ways and expanded to encompass a wide range of product categories, but our purpose remains the same: to make food safe, accessible, and easy to use. When developing new solutions, we carefully balance functionality, ease of use, and sustainability, because the best packages are those that work well for both people and the environment,” says Marie Sandin, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Sweden
