Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) recently issued a directive to all district officials to keep an eye out for manufacturers engaging in the unlawful practice of reusing tinplate for food packaging, especially edible oil. Reused cans are cans that have already been used once and are thrown away by the consumer after consumption of the food product and reused by some packers. The FDCA has directed officials to identify such entities in their jurisdiction and take legal action. The FDCA directive is considered important because there is widespread reuse of cans for packaging food items, especially edible oil. HG Koshia, Commissioner, FDCA, Gujarat State, said, “Our action is aimed at ensuring the safety of consumer health by curbing the illegal reuse of cans for packaged food products. According to the rules of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, reuse of cans for packaging food is prohibited.” According to industry sources, despite the widespread reuse of cans, many consumers are unaware of the risks associated with their use. “If reused without proper cleaning or repurposing, such cans can pose significant health risks. Environmental factors can cause chemical reactions and rust formation. These can cause stored food products to spoil prematurely, endangering consumer welfare,” said a food industry source.
