Located in Sanand, the plant will package advanced DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers supplied from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday inaugurate US memory chipmaker Micron Technology’s assembly, test and packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat. Union electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is also expected to attend the event.
The project, which broke ground in September 2023, was the first to be cleared under the India Semiconductor Mission. With a total investment of more than Rs 22,500 crore (USD 2.7 billion), the facility will eventually house about 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space once fully ramped up.
Located in Sanand, the plant will package advanced DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers supplied from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products. The output is aimed at customers worldwide, including those in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing segments.
The facility currently employs about 2,000 people. Micron has previously said the project is expected to create up to 15,000 indirect jobs.
Ahead of the inauguration, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi on Friday welcomed Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra and hosted a dinner for the visiting leadership team.
“Had a warm welcome dinner with President & CEO Sanjay Mehrotra and senior members of the Micron semiconductor leadership team ahead of the historic inauguration tomorrow,” Sanghvi said in a post on X.
