Packaging manufacturer Corplex has introduced closed edge technology for its AkyPak reusable plastic packaging range. The development is designed to improve safety, hygiene and durability in applications across several high-demand industries.
AkyPak products are made from Correx, a type of fluted (corrugated) plastic sheet which the company manufactures, and are used across sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food, where contamination risks are a concern, as well as automotive and electronics sectors. The new closed edge design seals the open corrugated edges of the material, helping to reduce contamination risks and prevent tearing or delamination. According to Corplex, the enhancement is engineered to withstand repeated handling and heavy-use environments, extending the lifespan of the packaging.
The sealed edges are intended to simplify cleaning and maintenance, preventing water from entering the fluting and supporting hygiene requirements in sectors where strict standards apply. Corplex says the technology is particularly suited to pharmaceutical and food industry applications, including fresh fish, where contamination risks are a concern.
The company also stated that the material is printable with both flexo and digital systems.
Corplex CEO Lucas van der Schalk said: “Closed edge technology pushes AkyPak into new territory. It reinforces the primary function of packaging – to protect the product – in a durable, hygienic and sustainable solution. With reusability built in, AkyPak goes a long way to help customers reduce their impact on the environment.”
The company noted that ease of use was also a key consideration. Features such as snap flaps and tabs are designed to support quick assembly and disassembly, which may be beneficial in fast-paced environments like cosmetics or electronics. The closed edges are also intended to provide a smoother, less abrasive surface for workers who frequently handle the packaging.
Mr Van der Schalk added that the sealed-edge construction contributes to a more refined visual appearance, which may be advantageous in sectors where packaging is visible at point of sale, including retail, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
