Foundation: About the Man who introduced Starch Adhesives in India
The companies were founded by Late Shri Natvarlal M. Parikh in 1955. Hailing from a small village in Gujarat,Ambreli,Late Shri Natvarlal M. Parikh arrived in Mumbai with high ambitions and dreams of setting up a business. He worked in a textile mill named “Elphinstone Spinning and Weaving Mills Company Limited” for a few months. The sizing operations at the textile mill gave him an idea that starch could also be used as an adhesive in place of silicate adhesive which were used in many industries. With thorough research, he found out that starch-based adhesives were used in US for postal stamps and started working on formulating recipes which could be used for paper-to-paper adhering, which were available in other countries but not in India.
To gain further knowledge, Late Shri Natvarlal M. Parikh joined a company engaged in Box Making, Jayant Paper Box. The industry, back then in the early 1950s, survived on raw materials which were procured only from overseas countries. The longer transit times and halts in production process were a common phenomenon in the phase when the overseas and domestic transport infrastructure were still primeval.
Having identified this gap, his inclination towards setting up a business and with aspirations of ameliorating the performance of the company where he worked, Late Shri Natvarlal M. Parikh, formulated a recipe of adhesive which could replace the imported adhesives. This was the founding stone in the establishment of companies: Sanjay Adhesives &. Vijay Chemical Industries’, as well as the starch derivative manufacturing industry in India.
Establishment : The rise
The founder, Late Shri Natvarlal M. Parikh, worked with the carton box manufacturing companyin the day time and would prepare adhesive solution made from starch in a makeshift shed on the roadside using conventional methods at night. He would then deliver this adhesive, to the company where he worked, in a hand cart. This went on for a few months, until he was motivated to focus more on manufacturing of starch adhesive.
In 1955, he formally started the manufacturing process in a place called Chinchpokli, Mumbai, which was later shifted to another suburb in Mumbai, Andheri in late 1960s. There was a sudden surge in demand as the domestic alternative provided was both cost effective and the lead time was less. In a short span of time, orders floated from across the country, and to cater to the requirements three new factories were established in Delhi, Madras – present day Chennai and Baroda.
The operations were, however, consolidated again and were centralized in Mumbai in the year early 1980s.
