SP Group, a leading company in flexible packaging solutions, has strengthened its production capacity with the addition of a new manufacturing line for side-gusseted bags, targeting the pet food sector. This strategic investment, located at its production centre in Villarrubia (Córdoba), marks a significant advancement in the production of large-format packaging, diversifying the company’s offering and reinforcing its position in a rapidly growing market.
The group has observed strong growth in the pet food market, both in Spain and across other European countries. This sustained growth is accompanied by a noticeable shift in consumer habits: nowadays, according to numerous studies, pet care and nutrition have become top priorities for households, with increasingly higher budgets allocated to their well-being.
Although SP Group’s portfolio already included a wide range of materials and formats compatible with the sector’s requirements, a key gap was identified: the absence of a specialized production line for large-format pet food bags, suitable for dogs, cats, and other animals. This need drove the search for a highly competitive technological solution to meet the demands of this specific market.
The new machinery enables the production of packages up to 1,000 mm in height and 150 mm in side gusset, with the capacity to hold up to 13 kg of pet food. These packages can incorporate functional closures such as zippers or velcro, ensuring product preservation throughout its entire shelf life. Previously, technical capabilities were limited to smaller formats (up to 600 mm), without advanced closures or side expansion.
This project has involved a significant investment, not only financially but also in terms of industrial planning. The integration of the new line required a thorough study of location, implementation, and efficiency within the production chain, aiming to maximize its performance and ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, an application for a subsidy has been submitted to support this technological implementation.
With this initiative, SP Group reaffirms its commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and personalized attention to market trends, consolidating its position as a European benchmark in the development of flexible, customized, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions.
