Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) Professor Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP has been recognized globally in PMMI Packaging and Handling Hall of Fame for significant contributions to packaging education and training.
Pienaar is the Education Director of AIP and President of the World Packaging Organization (WPO).
Pienaar, along with the other 2022 inductees, will be honored at a ceremony on Monday, October 24 at PACK EXPO International 2022.
The Packaging and Processing Technology Association (formerly the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute, or PMMI) recognizes packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education. The honor has been awarded since 1971.
Past inductees have been packaging leaders who have dedicated themselves to the industry through knowledge and volunteer leadership and have personally advanced the field of packaging.
Pienaar’s interest in packaging began in 1984 after studying pharmaceutics.n After working for a large pharmaceutical company, he became concerned with a number of packaging-related issues in the pharmaceutical world, which led to his research into various aspects of packaging.
Pienaar took over as Director of Education at AIP 14 years ago and is responsible for the education group that runs the Diploma in Packaging Technology, Certificate in Packaging, Foundations of Packaging Technology, the Certified Packaging Specialist programme, the MSc in Food and Packaging Innovation. , as well as an extensive portfolio of study courses and all student programs at the various universities with which AIP cooperates.
In addition to his role at AIP, Pienaar also lectures on packaging technology and science at 11 universities and institutes around the world. He holds an MSc (Packaging Engineering/Technology) from Brunel University in the UK. He also holds an MSc in Manufacturing and Manufacturing from the University of Hertfordshire, UK. He is a Registered Certified Packaging Professional, past president of AIP and recipient of the Founders Award in the Australasian region.
“This is a humiliation. But it is also a moment of pride when he is honored by his international colleagues. What I appreciate most about this award is that it gives me more opportunities to convince the global packaging industry that we need to become more sustainable, because there is no Plan B,” said Pienaar.
“Whatever packaging course you take, our future is packaging education. The more awareness they gain about packaging, it will enable better packaging technology decisions, leading to more innovation and better quality of life through better packaging for more people around the world,” he added.
