Modepack has unveiled a new type of mailing bag made from lignin and recycled plastic, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional eCommerce packaging.
The Lignin Mailing Bag, developed with Swedish biomaterial firm Lignin Industries AB, marks a significant advance in circular packaging.
The bag combines post-consumer recycled LDPE with Renol®, a thermoplastic made from lignin—a natural byproduct of the pulp and paper industry typically treated as waste. By repurposing lignin into packaging, the product reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 60–70% compared to conventional plastic films.
“This is not just another sustainable mailer. It’s a shift in material science,” said Jure Širić, Managing Director at Modepack.
The Lignin Mailing Bag is recyclable through standard LDPE streams and designed for durability, moisture resistance, and tear strength. It supports businesses under growing pressure to reduce fossil plastic use and comply with new EU and U.S. packaging regulations.
Key benefits include:
- Lower fossil-based content
- Use of renewable forestry byproducts
- Compatibility with existing recycling systems
- Courier-grade reliability
Modepack sees the launch as part of its broader commitment to circular innovation. “This is a major milestone, but it’s just the beginning,” Širić said.
