It comes at a pivotal moment, aligning with the recently released European Commission\u2019s proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the industry looks for ways to support the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Green Deal<\/a>\u2019s goals on climate, circularity and resilient food systems, beverage cartons with certified recycled polymers are now on supermarket shelves around Europe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/group.emmi.com\/che\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Emmi<\/strong><\/a>,<strong>&nbsp;Switzerland\u2019s market leader in dairy<\/strong>, recently introduced the world\u2019s first carton using certified recycled polymers in the packaging material. Its good day Milk Drink, packaged in Tetra Top\u00ae 1000 Base carton packages, has been on shelf since late 2022 and reflects Emmi&#8217;s ambitious aims towards circularity, including the usage of at least 30% recycled materials in all its packaging by 2027.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In February 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lactalis.fr\/en\/the-group\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lactalis Group<\/strong><\/a>,<strong>&nbsp;a world leading dairy player<\/strong>, revamped its organic ambient liquid cream in Tetra Brik\u00ae Aseptic cartons under its Brid\u00e9lice and Pr\u00e9sident brands with certified recycled polymers in the packaging material \u2013 a first in France.. The development supports Lactalis Group\u2019s efforts to foster innovative solutions towards a more circular packaging economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These collaborations add to a successful industry first with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savencia-fromagedairy.com\/implantation\/elvir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Elvir<\/strong><\/a>,&nbsp;<strong>a subsidiary of Savencia Fromage &amp; Dairy<\/strong>.For its Elle &amp; Vire brand, the company introduced a cap for beverage cartons, using certified recycled polymers, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fossil-based plastic production is set to increase by 10.8% between 2021 and 2025<sup>3<\/sup>. At the same time, 86% of shoppers are concerned about the usage of plastic and its impact on the environment, and believe that using recycled plastic is one of the best ways to tackle this challenge<sup>4<\/sup>. They have also started to act on it, increasingly choosing to buy products or packages with recycled material in the last&nbsp;<a><\/a>year.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ola Elmqvist, Executive Vice President Packaging Solutions, Tetra Pak,&nbsp;<\/strong>says:\u201cToday, the high share of renewable materials in Tetra Pak carton packages helps them feature a lower carbon footprint than many other packaging&nbsp;<a><\/a>options<sup>6<\/sup>. But we want to go further, continuously reducing reliance on virgin, fossil-based sources and keeping materials in circulation, together with our customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actions like these signify our response to stakeholder expectations, from food and beverage manufacturers to consumers and policy makers.
