Provided the PE layer is very thin – in some countries, contributing to less than five percent overall plastic content – the packaging is recyclable according to the current regulations.

“We wanted to go beyond that,” explains Bernd Gelder, Walki’s Business Development Manager for Industrial Packaging. Walki®Fibre Wrap is a heat-sealable, recyclable, paper-based packaging material ideal for non-food packaging that requires no separation of the coating in the recycling process.

When switching from plastic to paper for e-commerce or non-food applications such as household goods, toys or games, the most important requirements are strength and sealing properties. Walki®Fibre Wrap delivers the necessary properties when it comes to strength and is also heat sealable, unlike many other paper-based packaging solutions which are glued.

“The major advantage of heat-sealable paper solutions is that they allow producer to use the same equipment used to seal plastic,” says Gelder, adding that all grades of Walki®Fibre Wrap are also all printable.

HIGH-QUALITY FLEXO PRINTING

Walki®Fibre Wrap offers a base material with heat-seal properties on the back and high-quality flexo printing on the front.

“There is no need to use a separate printing provider since we can deliver the final packaging material in reels”, explains Gelder.

Walki®Fibre Wrap is available on bleached or unbleached craft paper grades, ranging from 50 to 90 gsm, and also on Paptic®, an ultra-high end biobased, recyclable and reusable packaging material with outstanding haptics that is especially suited to luxury applications.

“Innovative coating technologies will play a major part in helping us develop sustainable, fibre-based packaging solutions that are also fully recyclable”, says Gelder.

“Most companies already have a clear agenda for reducing plastic use in the coming years. We are seeing more and more demand – from consumers, retailers, brand owners and e-commerce providers – for recyclable packaging solutions.”

Author: Isabelle Kliger Walki’s brand new Walki®Fibre Wrap is the ideal solution for packaging non-food and e-commerce products that do not require demanding barrier properties.
