Packaging decisions influence how much material is used, how efficiently products are transported and stored and what happens to packaging at the end of its useful life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with standardized packaging, custom solutions can be designed around a product&#8217;s specific dimensions, protection requirements and distribution environment. When done well, this approach can reduce excess material, minimize empty space and improve efficiency throughout the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many companies continue to rely on standardized packaging that may not be the right fit for the products being shipped. Oversized boxes, generic inserts and excessive protective materials can increase material use while also consuming additional transportation and storage capacity. Custom packaging provides an opportunity to address these inefficiencies at the design stage by using only the materials and protection required for the application<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Designing Packaging for the Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Custom packaging can take many forms depending on a product\u2019s size, fragility and shipping requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Corrugated boxes and folding cartons\u00a0<\/strong>can be designed around a product&#8217;s dimensions to reduce empty space and the need for additional fillers<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Custom inserts, trays and molded supports<\/strong>\u00a0can provide targeted protection for fragile or high-value products while reducing unnecessary cushioning materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Custom crates\u00a0<\/strong>and protective systems can be engineered for heavy equipment, servers and other sensitive products and incorporate structural support and cushioning designed for the demands of freight transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The materials themselves are also an important consideration. Recycled content, recyclable materials and other lower-impact alternatives can be incorporated into packaging designs where they meet the required performance standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Custom Packaging\u2019s Impact on the Supply Chain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While custom packaging can save time, space and money, it can also improve operational workflow. The benefits of custom packaging extend beyond the packaging itself. Right-sized solutions can improve pallet utilization, reduce wasted space during transportation and make products easier to handle and store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Custom solutions directly reduce these inefficiencies to achieve cost savings and a cleaner, leaner supply chain. When packages are designed to align with automated handling systems or to stack efficiently on pallets, warehouses can optimize space and labor. Employees spend less time adjusting or repackaging products and more time on value-added activities. This efficiency extends to logistics partners and retailers who benefit from easier handling, faster loading and fewer damaged goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sustainable packaging is looks beyond material selection to consider how much material is needed, how many times packaging can be used, how efficiently it can be transported and what happens to it at the end of its useful life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Custom packaging can support these goals by reducing excess material and creating opportunities for recyclable, recycled-content or reusable solutions. In closed-loop systems, materials can be collected, processed and returned to the manufacturing cycle rather than becoming waste. For example, SPG has repurposed more than 12 million pounds of scrap into new products through its recycling efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, custom packaging enhances product protection and presentation. Packaging that is poorly suited to a product can increase the risk of damage during transportation. That can result in replacement shipments, additional material use and wasted products. Designing packaging around the product and its distribution environment can help reduce those downstream impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Packaging is often viewed as a necessary cost of doing business. But when companies consider packaging alongside transportation, material use, product protection and end-of-life management, it becomes an opportunity to improve the broader supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Custom packaging isn&#8217;t automatically more sustainable. Its value comes from designing the right solution for the product, the supply chain and the intended lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For companies looking to reduce waste and improve efficiency, packaging is a practical place to start.
